Poodles originated in Germany where they were used as water retrievers to collect ducks. The name poodle comes from the German word pudel, which means to splash in water. Poodles were well regarded all over Europe, but it was the French that standardized the breed and boosted their popularity. They became so popular that they were chosen as the national dog of France. Their working abilities faded over time and by the end of the twentieth century they were mainly used as companion dogs. The American Kennel Club first registered the standard poodle breed in 1886. The poodle’s intelligence and trainability help it maintain its ranking as one of the most popular dogs in the United States.
Poodle Health: Do they Need a Pet Insurance Plan?
Poodles are known to suffer from a variety of conditions that make insurance a worthwhile option. One of these illnesses is Addison’s disease, where the body doesn’t produce enough cortisol. Lack of cortisol can lead to a number of complications including Cushings syndrome. These conditions require lifelong treatment, costing thousands of dollars. It’s important to find an insurance policy that doesn’t exclude these problems, so financial help is available should your pet get sick.
Other Insurance Considerations:
• Poodles are susceptible to bloat, a stomach problem that needs emergency medical treatment as it can be fatal.
• They are particularly at risk of developing a number of eye problems that may require surgery.
• Hypothyroidism is known to affect poodles; this is a serious condition requiring medical help.
