The beagle is a member of the hound group. Although hounds have existed for centuries, the modern beagle was developed in Great Britain in the 19th century. Two men are credited with developing the current breed standards, Reverend Phillip Honeywood and Thomas Johnson. Between them, they bred in traits that not only made the beagle an excellent scenthound, but also attractive. The first of the modern beagle breed arrived in the United States in 1876, with the first dog being registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885.
