This striking looking cat is a close as it comes to having a jungle cat in your home. Bengals are a hybrid (or cross) between the Asian Snow Leopard (ASL) and domestic cats. Although the idea of such crosses is nothing new (first mention was made in a book written in 1889 by Harrison Weir), it took until the 1960s for it to become reality.
In 1963, a geneticist cat fancier made the first test matings. These were the first generation, and the current wisdom is that fourth generation or above Bengals make the best pets. This is because the wild-side of their nature has been sufficiently tamed to make them affectionate and family friendly.
Bengal Health: Why do they Need a Pet Insurance Plan?
Bengals seem more susceptible to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) than other breeds. This viral infection may be acquired as a kitten and incubates for one to two years, to cause illness in young adults. An affected cat is lethargic and develops a swollen belly, fluid on the chest, and goes off their food. There has been some success treating FIP-infected cats with interferon therapy, but this is expensive, and there is no guarantee of success. This is a particularly distressing condition because there is no proven treatment, and the majority of cases go steadily downhill. Choosing the right Pet Health Insurance can provide coverage for diagnostics and treatment for many conditions including FIP.
Other Insurance Considerations:
• Bengals are friendly and outgoing, but don’t always know when to back off. This means they get into fights and from time to time need treatment for wounds and abscesses
• Bengals are nosy cats and if allowed outside their inquisitive nature makes them more at risk of being struck by a car.
• Some Bengals are prone to stomach upsets from the parasite, Tritrichomonas. Diagnosis requires special lab tests and treatment can be lengthy and costly.
