The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba. The breed is believed to have originally arrived on the island on a boat from Spain the 18th century and is thought to be a descendant of the now extinct Bichon Tenerife.
Highly popular as pets in their native Cuba, the Havanese first came to America in the 1950s following the Cuban revolution. They became popular pets in the USA due to their toy dog status and suitability as a companion dog. They were first officially recognized by the American Kennel Club only fairly recently, in 1996.
