The Brittany’s roots go back to Brittany, France, 150 AD and dogs similar in appearance to the modern Brittany are pictured in tapestries and paintings as early as the 17th century. Brittany’s were bred for their hunting abilities and in the 1850’s the Reverend Davies wrote about a hunting and retrieving breed of dog like the Brittany that was particularly popular with poachers.
In the early 1900s, wealthy Englishmen went over to France to hunt, taking their spaniels and setters with them. This fresh blood added a final touches to the Brittany’s sporting ability.
The Brittany spaniel was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934, with “spaniel” being dropped in 1982, after 38 years of campaigning by the American Brittany Club. The breed is now officially known as the “Brittany”.
