Also known as Deutsche Dog and German Mastiff.
Great Danes were developed in Germany and are descended from English mastiffs and Irish wolfhounds. Wealthy Europeans imported dogs from England to use as hunting dogs, though these dogs varied widely in appearance and size. Selective breeding eventually standardized the breed into what we now know as the Great Dane and it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1887.
Even though Great Danes are a giant dog breed, they also have giant hearts. They are one of the most popular dog breeds due to their sweet, gentle natures and their loving interactions with children. And although they were bred as hunting dogs, these days Great Danes would rather laze around on the couch, surrounded by a loving family.
Great Dane Health: Do they Need a Pet Insurance Plan?
The unique height and stature of Great Danes leads to some specific health risks. As these dogs grow so large, so rapidly, great pressure is put not only on the bones of a Great Dane, but also the internal organs.
Great Danes are prone to skeletal problems including arthritis and other joint issues; operations may be required to correct these problems as your Great Dane ages. The cost of Vet care and medication is exacerbated by the size of the breed, however, the right pet insurance can help with the costs of common Great Dane health problems.
Other Insurance Considerations:
• The size of the Great Dane can put extreme pressure on their hearts.
• Due to their incredibly large size, Great Danes have larger vet bills – this is because medical care such as medication, vaccinations and x-rays are priced according to size and weight.
• Great Danes have a slow metabolism which means they often suffer from gastric problems including bloat.
