Pet insurance won't cover costs for any condition that your pet showed signs of before the start date of the policy. (Medical records or a vet exam might be required to establish your pet's health). But, pet insurance will cover new conditions and accidents. Also, all the pet insurance plans here will cover conditions that your pet might have been born with but haven't showed up yet. These are called hereditary or congenital conditions. So it's still important to get covered!

Beagle

The beagle is a member of the hound group. Although hounds have existed for centuries, the modern beagle was developed in Great Britain in the 19th century. Two men are credited with developing the current breed standards, Reverend Phillip Honeywood and Thomas Johnson. Between them, they bred in traits that not only made the beagle an excellent scenthound, but also attractive. The first of the modern beagle breed arrived in the United States in 1876, with the first dog being registered with the American Kennel Club in 1885. Although beagles were originally used for hunting, they are now one of the most popular breeds of pet dog in the United States. Their good nature and compact size make them excellent family pets.

Beagle Health: Do they Need an Insurance Plan?

Beagles are prone to a variety of issues including epilepsy, hypothyroidism, back problems and beagle pain syndrome. Beagle pain syndrome, known as steroid responsive meningitis, has multiple symptoms and is often difficult to diagnose. It requires treatment with steroids and may cost thousands of dollars to treat. Beagles are also known as a chondrodystrophic breed, meaning they are prone to disk disease that can cause many complications including paralysis. Disk problems require medical treatment and in some cases surgery. All of these conditions can be stressful to both you and your pet, but the right insurance can help with the cost and reduce the stress on your finances.

Other Insurance Considerations:

• They are considered high risk for epilepsy that requires expensive treatment for the duration of your pets life.

• Beagles are prone to obesity that can exaggerate back problems.

• They are susceptible to Hypothyroidism, a condition that requires long-term medication to help the thyroid function correctly.
